Welcome to My Photography Story

I'm excited to share my journey as a portrait photographer and my dream of becoming a lifestyle photographer. In this blog, I'll share my work and the stories behind each photo, plus my adventures in the portrait world, with a special focus on capturing genuine moments with families.

In 2016, when my first son was born, my whole way of looking at photography changed. Taking pictures of his earliest moments created a new passion in my life that would eventually become Nikki Carlsen Photography. Every time I took a picture, it wasn't just about capturing his cuteness or silliness—it was about educating myself and constantly trying to better my photography skills.

The Start of My Photography Journey

My adventure began with one significant purchase: a DSLR camera. Unboxing it felt like opening a door to countless possibilities. I took every online course I could find, watched endless hours of videos, and experimented with my new camera settings to learn the fundamentals of my new hobby.

As a new parent, my camera became an extension of me, documenting every milestone from my son’s first smile to his first steps. I quickly realized that my passion for capturing my family’s memories could extend beyond just us. It inspired me to photograph other families, especially with young children.

Photography became a vital way for me to express my storytelling ability. I began seeing the beauty in everyday moments, like a child’s laughter during playtime or the beautiful and perfect way a mother holds her baby.

Exploring Lifestyle Photography

While portrait photography has been my focus, I dream of expanding my skills into lifestyle photography. This style tells a story by capturing real-life moments. It emphasizes the genuine, everyday experiences—like a family enjoying a picnic in the park, relaxing at home, or exploring a new waterfront together.

During a recent in-home session, I documented a family doing all their favorite activities. They played with a train set, read a book together, and cut apples to snack on. As they enjoyed these simple yet meaningful moments, I captured candid shots that beautifully illustrated their unique bond. My goal is for my photographs to resonate, bringing viewers back to those emotions whenever they see them.

Embracing Authenticity in My Work

One key part of my photography style is focusing on real moments instead of stiff poses. True interactions make for the best photos. I usually suggest clients do things they enjoy, like playing games, making music, or reading a picture book together.

This approach helps me document the essence of my subjects, from the twinkle in a child's eye when they catch fireflies to the warmth of a parent's embrace while reading bedtime stories. My goal is to create a joyful atmosphere where clients forget the camera's presence and simply enjoy the moment.

My Aspirations for the Future

Looking ahead, I strive to expand my portrait business into lifestyle photography. I dream of creating a portfolio that reflects my deep passion for storytelling with a beautiful film inspired look.

I want to work with families in various settings, capturing their unique stories and crafting lasting memories. I imagine exploring different locations, from urban streets to nature trails, and showcasing the beauty of each family I photograph.

In the end, I want to put together a collection of work that really connects with people, stirring up emotions and sharing stories that never get old. I see my photos as beloved keepsakes, passed down through the years, reminding families of their happiness and love.
